lauerman family

Today we were able to get together with some of my cousins, aunts, and uncles.

stuttering

Two weeks ago Lazarus's stutter reappeared. It makes me wonder how the brain works, that he can talk normally for months, and then back to stuttering. Joshua's noticed that Lazarus has started to get frustrated by it a couple times now. we'd love prayers for his speech. i need to do a better job of slowing down my talking. With three kids all trying to talk to me at the same time a lot now, sometimes i try to rush through too many conversations at once, rather than giving Lazarus all the time and attention i should when he's speaking.  Evalana's never even said anything about the way Lazarus is talking. She's a great sister. So our family is continuing to let lazarus finish his own sentences as we also pray that this stuttering challenge will be over for him soon.
7/1 update: Thank you for the prayers. Today was sooo much better for his talking.

two weeks

We've had a great first two weeks with Ezekiel. I loved being in my own home--so much better than starting out in a hospital. The first morning, Joshua brought me a delicious completely homemade breakfast of biscuits and gravy, eggs, and hashbrowns.
Ezekiel's doing great. He smiled at us on his second day. His umbilical cord fell off when he was just a few days old, and Evalana was very excited for him, saying, "Baby brother has a belly button now!" When family came to visit, Lazarus was excited to point out Ezekiel's penis when i changed his diaper and would say, "He has penis like me!" and then pull his underwear down to show how similar the brothers are. His first Monday Shannon came to check on us, and we were doing well. This past Monday we all went to Debbie's for his checkup. He weighed 11 1/2 pounds (had gained a pound in his first 11 days).
Last week he started getting fussy and grunty on Friday, and Saturday was worse. Sunday i eliminated all allergen foods from my diet. It didn't seem to help any. Wednesday evening we were able to get in to the chiropractor, and he's been doing great since then, so Thursday i went back to my normal eat anything diet. Joshua was nervous about the chiropractor being gentle enough, but she was so gentle that Joshua doesn't think she did anything.
Well now tomorrow he'll be three weeks old, and i still haven't finished this post. I guess not having a keyboard on my laptop doesn't help. My recovery from his birth has been great. After evalana was pretty tough. After Lazarus was good. And this one's even better. For the last trimester I took 4000mg/day of alfalfa, and it helped so much with postpartum bleeding. Ezekiel's placenta was huge, so i had a wound that size on my uterus, and, other than the days when i try to do too much, it's seemed to heal up very quickly. And my belly has gone down much faster than after Lazarus. I know i'm not actually small, but being down from a 49" waist and losing 30lbs in a couple weeks makes me feel small. i'm enjoying being able to bend forward, going up the stairs without getting out of breath, and laying however i want. the biggest issue for me right now is that my abdominal muscles separated during the pregnancy, so now i need to do some special exercises to get those back together and try my best not to use those weak core muscles in the meantime (even being careful how i stand up, and i can't carry anything heavier than ezekiel. when debbie had Joshua feel how separated they are, joshua got very concerned. it does feel very strange, but i can work to fix them.
Saturday i was able to get to Children's Place and get some clothes for Ezekiel. Thankfully Grandma Nancy had brought over some clothes for him a couple weeks ago so that he at least had something to wear. He was in 6-month size when he was born! So i just had to guess on what sizes he might be this year when buying him clothes.
Lazarus and Evalana are great with him. Lazarus checks on him and talks with him. Evalana can't keep her hands off of him. She's constantly trying to love on him--touching his head or feet or hands, asking to hold him, suggesting what he might need. We're really working on not touching him while he's nursing or sleeping, but she forgets about every ten seconds. Other times she is really helpful, holding him or talking to him while i quickly get something done.
The strangest thing about Ezekiel is that he gets upset if i offer him milk when he just wants to go to sleep. i haven't experienced a baby like that before. i thought nursing solved about every cause of crying. but when Ezekiel is tired, he just wants to be held to sleep. it'll be so fun to keep learning more about this boy as he continues to grow.
Oh i forgot to write about his first week. i was so very thankful to have Meema here. Ezekiel was born Wednesday evening. Joshua had to work Thursday and Friday to get all of his projects ready for coworkers to take over before he took two weeks off. Ezekiel and i stayed in bed as much as we could during that time. Poor Shelby had such a hard time with her ear infection. Meema and Gigi were up with her a lot at night, and they still pretty much completely took care of Evalana and Lazarus too during the day. Evalana and Lazarus had a lot of fun playing with 11-month-old shelby, too. Gigi had to leave very early Thursday morning to go back to work, and then she came back on Friday night, and they all went home Saturday night.
Sunday we left the house for the first time, and we all went to church. The kids were excited to be able to share the news about their baby brother. Lazarus is still stopping most anyone who will listen to ask them, "Do you know i have baby brother? His name is Zeekel Ray Vaughn." Ezekiel didn't even cry much in the car seat, which i was so thankful for.
The week of the 10th Joshua, Evalana, and Lazarus went to VBS. i'll write more about that later. it was great for all of them to be able to do that in the mornings, and Ezekiel and i had a little quiet time at home. i tried to do some dishes and get some of the laundry done that hadn't been washed for over a week, but it felt like a lot of work, and i ended up doing too much. our house was probably the cleanest it's been in four or five years, right before ezekiel was born. now it's a pretty good mess since i just can't keep up with housework and take care of ezekiel and give my body the rest it's needing. joshua's been a huge help, but he's also very tired, staying up late and getting up early, studying for a work certification test he has to take this friday. Thursday the 13th great grandpa and grandma johnson stopped by. i'm so glad we got to see them. Friday the 14th we got some pictures taken. Sunday the 16th we went to Tompa and Grandma Nancy's since Aunt Jennifer and Uncle Chris were in town. It was great to see them and have a little time with everyone, but we'd had a couple of rougher nights, and i didn't get my nap on sunday, so i was pretty tired. then the second week of joshua's vacation was a little more relaxed, and they just worked on some projects around here and playing.
Okay, i'm going to add pictures to this post later. i have plenty of good ones, but i want to get this posted before he turns a month old.

Ezekiel's birth

Starting out our day like
a regular morning
Two weeks ago, June 5th, we hadn't yet seen our Ezekiel. A week before his birth day, I'd started feeling some braxton hicks. The morning of his birth day, when we were at 41 weeks, I was having some more contractions, but i was also doing a lot of housework, so i thought that might be contributing to the increase. When I took a nap, i didn't sleep very well since the contractions were making me uncomfortable, so, at that point, I got hopeful that baby was going to be born sometime that week. Through the day I was getting more uncomfortable with the contractions, but i still wanted to take the kids to the library. On the drive to the library, i thought the baby was probably going to come that day, although i still thought it'd be later at night (since i was so positive that my baby would not come while the sun was up). We made it a very quick pick up our books trip and then back to the car about 3:30 where i called Joshua since i realized the baby might be born during the day time. He was on a work call, so i sent him a text saying that I thought Baby would be coming that day. Thankfully his work call ended up needing to be rescheduled anyway, so then he was able to help prepare for the birth. When Joshua told the kids that baby was going to be born soon, Lazarus just stared at my belly like the baby could pop out at any moment, and Evalana got a very excited smile on her face. Joshua and i cried at the overwhelming thought of holding our third baby soon.
I had made a list of the things that needed to be done (like filling up the pool), so Joshua worked on that while I called our moms, midwife, and photographer and sent a few texts to update family and friends. it was wonderful to know that friends were praying for us during the labor and birth. Mom came over and helped with the kids and got stuff ready. Greg came to help with the kids. Sheila arrived to take pictures. That morning Meema had gone to Arkansas to pick up Shelby (our 11-month-old niece) while Kristen and Brent were on their honeymoon. Shelby had an ear infection, so they went to the doctor, got her antibiotics, and made it to Joplin, but then they were waiting for Gigi to get to Joplin so they could ride together and one of them could sit by Shelby to help her on the drive to Kansas City. Poor Shelby did not feel good. I had really really wanted them to be able to make it here for the birth, but, when those contractions picked up, I was ready to get the baby out and realized they weren't going to make it in time. I think Debbie, Shannon, and Gail arrived around 5pm, or maybe it was a little after that. Debbie is our midwife, Shannon is her student who can also help in an emergency situation, in case one of them needed to take care of me while the other tended to the baby. And Gail is Debbie's new student. I had ideas of the clothes i could wear to look decent for the photos through the labor, but i was too focused on dealing with contractions to work on changing clothes. I was concerned we'd run out of hot water before Joshua got the pool filled up, but he got it all filled up and the right temperature all in time.
Evalana was still in the bedroom, trying to be my little doula, and she was actually doing a great job. She was giving me drinks of my coconut water and trying to help press on my back or hips like Joshua had done. Then she decided to leave when things picked up a little more.
My mom was praying for me while i leaned
on her through the contraction
I went to the bathroom, and my water broke. I got a little concerned when I saw that it wasn't clear (the baby had pooped in the fluid), but Shannon said, "that's okay." Every time they checked the baby's heart rate, it was reassuring to hear that Baby was doing well. After my water broke, I took off my clothes except my bra, decided there was no way I could put on the sports bra top at that point, and they helped me back to the bedroom. I said I needed to throw up. Joshua quickly grabbed the bucket. I told him to get the stinky bucket away, and then told him I needed it back, and threw up some more. Poor husband. Then Shannon said to get in the pool quickly before another contraction came. I wasn't sure if i could do it, but i made it in.
I instantly felt so much better when I got in the water. I was kneeling, and Joshua was on the outside, and I threw up on him. He's such a good husband. I pushed a little in that position, then Debbie suggested I lift up one knee (so that I was on a knee and a foot). We did that for a bit, then she said to switch, so I did, with some help. Then she suggested squatting. I got onto both my feet, in a squat, and that felt good. After some more pushing, I finally, finally was making some progress, and Baby's head started coming down a little. It was hard work pushing that baby out. Debbie said I was in a squat for 11 minutes. The squat was comfortable since I was in the water and holding onto Joshua, and he was helping to hold me, but the pushing took more work than Lazarus, and I was ready to get the baby out. At one point, I said "get this baby out of me" or "i want this baby out" or something like that, and Debbie said, "That's your job. We can't do it for you." Thanks. This was so much better than my labor with Lazarus. I actually felt somewhat in control of the pushing. Everyone was encouraging and praying and calm.
Also, watching the video my mom took, I saw that they were doing all sorts of things to accommodate what was most comfortable to me--they were reaching at strange angles to get baby's heart rate. They had a mirror on the bottom of the pool to see baby's head. They used a flashlight to get light where they needed to see. It was still daylight, and we actually had one of the windows open until i realized i didn't want all of the neighbors hearing me.
Mom did go check on the kids at one point and I think just told them that that's the sound moms make sometimes when they're having a baby. Evalana said, "I know." And Lazarus didn't seem concerned about it at all. Grandpa Greg must have been doing a great job. I had been worried about how Lazarus would handle my being uncomfortable or not being able to take care of him, but he was totally fine. I think then they went out on the porch and ate M&Ms. Finally I could feel Baby's head coming down and out. Because he took so long to descend, Debbie realized he was a big baby (and we already knew he wasn't small), so she helped his shoulders come out at the easiest angle--kind of pushing the head back (which is easier to do in the water) as it turns (head comes out facing my back then baby rotates shoulders through and body delivers face up), so the shoulders come through the widest part of the pelvis rather than shoulders getting caught on my pubic bone and causing a more dangerous situation. Instead of the whole baby just flying out, I actually had a little pause between his head coming out and the rest of his body.

Then, at 5:50pm, Joshua reached into the water and pulled him up while I sat back, and he handed him to me, and I couldn't believe a baby just came out of me. What a miracle. Having not had any ultrasound, there was a lot we didn't know about this baby. Everything seemed to be just as it was supposed to, but i wasn't even thinking about that at the time. i was just so amazed that i was holding this little baby. Shannon was checking his heart rate and stuff, and his APGAR was 10 (which is good), but i didn't even notice any of that. i was just holding my sweet new little baby. After over a minute, Shannon suggested we see if the baby's a boy or girl. I was so surprised to see that he was a boy.

Then mom brought the kids in, and i loved their faces. Evalana just looked thrilled at seeing her new baby, and Lazarus looked both a little confused at the baby being out of my belly and very happy. We told them they had a brother. They were so excited.

Some of our first looks at this sweet new face:

i delivered the placenta. joshua cut the cord.

I love these pictures of Joshua holding Ezekiel because he looks so much calmer than he did holding Lazarus while the doctor was worried about my bleeding, the nurses were pounding on my stomach, and they wouldn't give me a drink of water.
Then joshua held his new little son while Shannon helped me from the tub to the bed. Then we tried nursing, although i wasn't getting him to stay latched on.

smile for facebook

We had a little "family of five" time together. We all prayed to thank God for our baby boy, and Lazarus said a great prayer for everyone in the room.
Tompa and Grandma Nancy came by to see their new little grandson, but they didn't stay too long. Joshua, Ezekiel, and i had a little cuddle time and ate some grapes, cheese, apples, and peanut butter while Mo and Grandpa Greg took the big kids to Chipotle for dinner.
Then Shannon did the newborn exam. He weighed 10lbs, 8oz, and was 23" long. And his cute Vaughn head was 15.5" around. He's a healthy boy. They said he had hip clicks and a tight jaw and suggested that we see a chiropractor the next week. I kept having trouble getting him to really nurse. He'd start to latch on and then fall back asleep. Shannon said that sometimes babies who come so quickly are just more tired. Around 10:30pm that night, he did end up nursing great and has been going strong since then. They got everything from the birth cleaned up so quickly (tub drained and put away, towels in the wash...). I got a couple of stitches from the tear that great little head made coming out. Debbie said I was only the third person this year who had torn, so I got to help demonstrate a rare lesson in stitches for Shannon and Gail (yea :-/). Then they packed up and left. Joshua and my mom got Evalana and Lazarus ready for bed, although the kids were so excited they ended up staying awake for awhile longer. My mom went home. Meema, Gigi, and Shelby got here about 11pm. I was sorry they missed the birth, but it was great to have them here that night, even though Gigi had to leave early that next morning.
Most of that night Ezekiel slept, and I stared at him and thanked God for him. And it was so so so great to be at home. I loved everything about this home birth. Unless there's a medical need for it, I can't imagine doing another birth in a hospital. Ezekiel and i pretty much stayed in bed for that whole next day, too. So much better than someone coming in at midnight to weigh him and 5am to take my blood and everything else they did in the hospital while i just wanted to sleep and take care of my baby. And, of course, no one even suggested we poke him three times to test his blood sugar since Debbie could see that his blood sugar was fine, and they still have to ask if i want to vaccinate him against an STD right away, but they expect me to say no. In every way that homebirth is different from hospital birth, i loved it. I can only imagine how our birth story might be different if we had been in a hospital with this big boy who was taking "too long" to descend, rather than in the water, squatting, doing just what my body needed in order to get him out in the most healthy way. I am so thankful that through research and prayer, God led us to have this baby at home with a wonderful midwife.
I'm working on the video so i can share part of that soon.

Lazarus is 2 1/2

Today this sweet boy is 2 1/2 years old. I love hearing him talk. It's very rare that i can't understand what he's saying since he clearly says big complete sentences. He's really great at thanking people and telling us he loves us. He's a good cuddler, too. I wasn't sure how things would go with my cuddly boy and the new baby, but Lazarus has done great. He gets more daddy cuddles but also does fine with my not being able to hold him as much. Lazarus loves Ezekiel. At church last Sunday he was stopping all sorts of people to tell everyone, "Did you know I have baby brother? His name is Zeekel Ray Vaughn." Lazarus and Evalana play so well together most of the time. They really love being together. Lazarus is our tall skinny boy at 30lbs and i think 36". He really really loves cheese sandwiches and cookies. Some other favorites are pizza and spaghetti. I can't think of anything he actually doesn't like, but there are many times he decides something is "ucky" and won't even take a bite, even if he liked the food the day before. He would eat spoonfuls of mayonnaise and butter if i let him.
He stopped wearing diapers at home (except overnight) a year ago, and he's recently decided he's okay with using big toilets out in public, so he hasn't been wearing diapers other than at nighttime now. But he still loves cuddling with his diaper rags. He loves the color orange. He plays trains almost all day every day. He really really really loves Thomas the Train movies, books, toys, anything train. He sees train tracks everywhere (sidewalk lines, power lines, stitches on clothes...).
He's great at playing by himself. He'll get his tracks and trains all set up, and then he'll just lay and play with his trains or cars or whatever for sometimes a couple of hours. Lazarus is a really great storyteller. He looks his audience in the face, changes his tone of voice, and gets very creative. Lazarus also has moments of what i call "being a two year old," especially if he's tired, hungry, or thirsty. If those basic needs aren't met, he can get very upset. He stomps his foot and demands things like, "Don't say that! Don't look at me! Don't say words!" Joshua found these videos that we think are pretty funny since i can relate to some of them too well.
Lazarus likes doing things himself. He's fairly adventurous. He also enjoys helping daddy with projects, especially if it involves a hammer. Lazarus likes bath time and sometimes requests a bath in the middle of the day, too. He mostly lays in the tub and plays with his bath trains. Lazarus likes to play outside and is still talking about wanting there to be snow. Lazarus also likes to dance with Daddy, especially to Share the Well and he likes to listen to music. We love this amazing boy so much. God certainly blessed us when he gave us Lazarus Canaan.

baby guesses

First place goes to Daddy. Lazarus (who actually did make up his guess on his own) gets second. And Shawna gets third place in guessing about our baby Ezekiel's birth. Thanks for playing :-)

Ezekiel Ray

Baby is a week old today, and we're so happy to say he has a name! Joshua finished his work up on Monday, so yesterday we got a chance to go over our name list together. After taking off all the girl names, we had 50 boy names. We narrowed that down to six we liked for first names. In the evening we came back to that list of six, narrowed it down to two, and decided that we liked Ezekiel enough to use a name that's more common.
Ezekiel means "the Lord will strengthen," and we pray that our Ezekiel gets his strength from the Lord. The biblical Ezekiel was a prophet who wrote the book of Ezekiel. Ezekiel gave some hard news to the people from about 592-570BC about the destruction of Jerusalem and visions of the new temple. Ezekiel relied on the strength of God in a way we can all hope for.
Ezekiel's middle name is Ray, which is both Joshua's and Papa's middle name. Ezekiel was born on the day before Papa's birthday. While Ezekiel grows to be his own person--we pray that he will be the man who God is calling him to be--I'm so thankful for these examples of amazing Christ following men he has as his daddy and grandpa. Although we miss Papa so much, and Ezekiel won't get to meet him until hopefully in Heaven, Papa has already influenced Ezekiel's life in wonderful ways. Both Lowell Ray Vaughn and Joshua Ray Vaughn are incredible men, and we pray that our Ezekiel Ray Vaughn will honor God with his life. Ezekiel also shares his middle name with his cousin Shelby Rae who was born last June 29th. Ray has several great meanings. It means my companion, counselor and protector (similar to my grandpa Melvin's name which means "a friend who offers counsel"). It can also mean royal, my shepherd, my friend, and grace. We do pray that our little Ezekiel grows to be a wonderful friend and protector, a son of God our true King.
It feels so good to be done with this project i've been working on for nine months. Naming a child is such a giant decision, but, praying our way through it, we think this is the perfect name for our sweet Baby 3 who will probably be glad to go by something other than Squishy and Baby Brother as he gets older. And we've got a good start on a name list for a possible baby 4 someday.

names

Baby 3 arrived last Wednesday! More on that soon, but right now we're working on his name.
While you're waiting, here's what we came up with for our first two:

FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2008

She has a name!

After much prayer, we've named our little girl!
Evalana Christabelle Vaughn

Eva is a Hebrew name meaning “life”, and Lana is a Gaelic word meaning “rock”.
Christa means “follower of Christ” and Belle means “beautiful”.
And Vaughn is a Welsh word meaning “small” :-)
We plan to call her Evalana (pronounced "ev ah LAH nah").

How did we come up with this name? Joshua liked the name Evelyn, but it was on the 2007 top 100 list, and we didn't want a common name, so I looked online for names that started with "ev". I found the name Evalina, and we just changed it a little. I have no idea where Joshua came up with the name Christabelle, but I liked it. And Evalana shares part of her middle name with her Great Grandpa Chris Johnson, Aunt Kristen, Aunt Michelle Kristen, and Uncle Alex Christopher.

Lazarus

The baby boy has a first name! We've decided on the name Lazarus. Lazarus means God is my help. The Bible has two different Lazarus stories in it. One is the story of a man with leprosy named Lazarus and a rich man. The other is the more well-known story, and the one which influenced our son's name. Lazarus is the brother of Mary and Martha and a very good friend of Jesus. Lazarus died, and Jesus brought him back to life. We've recently heard two church messages on this story of Lazarus, too--Westside's 8/29/10 message on love like you're dying, and the 9/12/10 Fellowship message on the raising of Lazarus. Joshua mentioned the name Lazarus before we had found out that Evalana was a girl. As we went through name ideas for this little boy, Lazarus was the only one we've liked. Although our Lazarus doesn't have any stories of coming back from the dead that we know of yet, I think it's an amazing miracle each time God creates a life. And, I'm so thankful for the eternal life we receive in a relationship with Christ. We're so excited to now be able to call our baby boy by name.
As far as the middle name, we've spent lots of time looking through name books and websites, but we haven't figured it out yet.

Canaan

Lazarus finally has a middle name. After Gigi jokingly suggested Lazarus Nazareth, Joshua came up with Lazarus Canaan. He immediately decided that was his name, but I needed some time to make such a big decision. Lazarus means "God is my help" and has a great story of Lazarus being a good friend of Jesus who got sick and was dead for four days, and then Jesus performed the miracle of bringing him back to life. Canaan seems to mean "land of reeds." In the Bible, Noah's son, Ham's, youngest son was named Canaan. Canaan was the name of the promised land that is a region of what is now Palestine. Canaan was described as a land flowing with milk and honey, and we love milk and honey at our house.
We love these names for our son because we know that we can't accomplish anything truly good without God. I think a baby is a miracle--that God can create a life inside of me, no matter how long that little life lives, and it is amazing to me to feel Lazarus moving around inside of me and to think of seeing his face and holding him in our arms in a couple more months. He is such a gift and undeserved blessing to us.

41 weeks

Today this baby broke Evalana's record for being in my belly the longest. Tomorrow will be 41 weeks. I'm really hoping that the baby will decide to come out this week, but i'm not sure that's going to happen. If I'm still pregnant next week, then we'll do a biophysical profile to check on baby. At this point, though, we can tell that baby's moving, has plenty of fluid, and has a good heart-rate, and i'm not feeling concerned about any of it. For as little as we know about this baby and pregnancy, i've felt peace about all of our decisions so far. Meema and Shelby are coming tomorrow, so i'd love it if this baby would decide to come out while they're here this week. I know God has the perfect birth day picked out for this little one. We're so looking forward to seeing this little one's face.
We've also been enjoying our "extra" waiting time, though. I'm still reading through lots of name books. We're doing some school time and hanging out with friends. And we also made sunscreen, hand sanitizer, liquid soap, and some stuff like that that i've been meaning to do for a long time but hadn't gotten around to.
